Groundwork for Electronic Locker Produce Distribution

Project focus area

Support the development of a pilot project aimed at improving access to locally-grown fresh produce through convenient, anonymous pickup locations in Johnson County, Kansas

Demographics

Persons with low income

Evidence

Pilot recipients shared strong positive feedback:
-- Families reported a meaningful reduction in grocery expenses, allowing them to redirect funds to other essential household needs.
-- Participants expressed excitement about receiving high-quality, fresh foods that met their specific dietary requirements.
-- One family shared that the convenience of home delivery helped reduce stress and ensured they could consistently prepare meals aligned with their health needs.

County clinic staff expressed appreciation for FEI’s willingness to learn clinic workflows and understand the operational realities of screening and referral processes. Clinics shared that while screening can be burdensome, particularly in high-volume environments, they see strong potential in collaborating on food-as-medicine efforts. Staff highlighted that certain populations, such as older adults are more aligned with FEI’s qualification criteria and may represent higher-impact referral opportunities.
In addition, county partners expressed interest in FEI broadening program eligibility to include conditions such as heart failure, emphasizing the strong relationship between nutrition, hospitalization rates, and chronic disease management.

Progress

  1. Set your project focus and actions, who you’ll engage, and how you’ll measure success—plus a simple timeline. Submit this setup to kick off.
  2. Share what’s done, what you’re learning, and any course corrections. Note any support needs to stay on track.
  3. Summarize outcomes and evidence (reach, partnerships, dollars), key insights and barriers, and recommended next steps. Completing this closes your Actioneer project.
